The Scientific Method
Aim To compare the boiling point of tap water and salt water.
Hypothesis I think that salt water.
Equipment
150 mls tap water ( two)
salt (2 tsps)
2 beakers
Bunsen Burner
Safety glasses
Bunsen Burner tripod
Heat resistance mat
Gauze Mat
Thermometer
Method
1. Is to collect equipment
2. Attach Bunsen burner to gas tap
3. Fill up both beakers with water.
4. Add salt to one beaker and mix.
5. Place the beaker with tap water on the tripod.
6. Place the Bunsen burner on the heat mat underneath.
7. light the Bunsen burner and adjust the flame to blue.
8. as it heats up place the thermometer in the beaker of the water until it is boiling.
9. Record the temperature on your blog.
10. Repeat the process for the salt water.

Orana Wildlife Park

 Orana Wildlife Park 

On Monday we went to Orana Wildlife park. We went there for our hauora kete. We went to Orana park on a bus a left about 9:30. When we got to Orana Wildlife park we lined in our groups. In our groups we explored the park. The person who showed us around was Toby and was one of the keepers. We saw a lot of animals and birds. My favorite part about going to Orana park was getting to see the kiwis and the Tigers.

When we went to see the kiwis we had to be very quiet. It was hard to find the kiwis cause it was very dark but I did mange to find all of them.

When we went through to see the tigers. We saw a male tiger and he was fully grown. The Tiger was growling a lot and Toby said if it is a mean growl it is for is brother. If it was a growl that is kind  of quiet it means it was for us. I liked seeing the tigers because I love the strips on there body and how they move around.

Overall I loved my trip to Orana Wildlife Park because I loved that we got to go out in the sun and see some magnificent animals.

The Color of The Flame

The Color of The Flame
Today we had science YAY.

Today we were learning and using the Bunsen Burner.

We had to learn the safety rules first though obviously.

1. The location of the lab fire extinguisher and safety blanket is known.

2. Safety glasses were worn.

3. Long hair was tied back and loose items of clothing tucked away.

4. The Bunsen Burner was placed on a heat resistance surface. 

5. The Bunsen Burner is not too close to the edge of the desk.

6. The burner was connected to the gas tap correctly.

7. The rubber tubing was checked for cracks or leaks. 

8. The air hole on the Bunsen burner was closed before lighting.

9. The splint was lit before the gas was turned on.

10. The splint was positioned correctly while the gas was turned on.

11. The student can adjust the flame safely.

So after all that we could get started.

When we were using the Bunsen burner we had to make the different color flames e.g a blue to green flame. At the end we got a Bunsen Burner licence.
I liked using the Bunsen burner because i had never used one before. My favorite part was getting to see the flames change there color.

Lunch Box Homework week 2

The Fabulous lunch box

This is a lunch box that has a balance of fruit and snacks. This lunch box is good because it has a good amount of fruit. It has an apple some grapes and a watermelon. It also has some carrots which is a vegetable. This lunch box has a total of 4 fruit and veg so it will be easy to get a total of 5 fruit a day with this lunch box. For the yummy treats it has nuts and croissant. To top it all off it has a juice box and a sandwich.

This would have to be my absolute dream lunch box.

Digital learning tools

Digital learning tools
We use a lot of  different online tools to help us in class. We use these online tools to either help us out, make something more efficiently or make something more creative. In this case it is to help us out.

e-ako maths is one of our many online tools we use.

e-ako is a site based on learning maths.

It teaches you all about

This site is really handy when you are being introduced to something that you are stuck on and helps you in many ways. If lets say you are struggling on your basic facts it has range of tasks to help you get better.

Overall I like using e-ako because it teaches maths to me in a different light to what teachers do.

Math Time

913 - 57 = ??? In maths we have been learning how to take away a 2 digit number from a 3 digit number. The way we have learnt I think is easy and is fast to do. The method is to use addition and subtraction.
This is how we used this method to work out 913 - 57= ?

913 - 57 = 856

57 + 43 = 100

913 - 100 = 813

813 + 43 = 856

Highlighted in red is the adding and subtracting.
I think that this is the best way to work out what an answer to an 3 digit number take away 2 digit number.
Overall I think that this would come in hand when working out something when you do not have a calculator handy.

Homework Week 1

Hands On Fire

HANDS ON FIRE!!!

Aim: I want to  be safety able to set myself on fire.


Equipment
Water
soap
lighter
Safety glasses
lab coat

Method 
1. Be safe
2. wet your hands writs and forearms. 
3. Grab a scoop of bubbles.
4. Hold the bubbles up in front of your face, as far away from you as you can. Lock your elbows.
5. To get rid of fire, SLOWLY move your hands a part.
6.  DO NOT DROP YOUR HANDS BELOW YOUR EYE LEVEL because fire goes up and you will set yourself on fire.

Results 
The results are the when peoples hands are being set on fire people tend to drop there hands down.

Aim: To watch dry ice and water mix to make coloured bubbles.

Equipment

1 Dry Ice

2 80mls water

3 There drops food colouring

4 Detergent

5 measuring beaker.

6 ice cream container 

and most importantly safety glasses 

Which gas is heaviest?

Aim: To find our which gas is the heaviest out of C02 and O2.

1 Test Tube

Healthy Person Diagram

We have been learning about what it takes to be healthy and what you can do to be healthy. In groups we had to create a google drawing that shows someone talking about being healthy. Me and Ruby were a team and we created this google drawing.

I love the google drawing because of the colour contrast from blue to purple. I loved making this google drawing with Ruby because we did something original. Overall I think that this was a fun task and the only thing challenging was getting pictures that are labelled for noncommercial. 

Learning To Give Change

LO: To learn how to give change

We have been learning to give change from big amounts.

We showed our learning by making this DLO ( Digital Learning Object).

What I have learned from making this is there is a way to teach something in less then 3 minutes.

Our World Our Life

We have been learning about the 4 spheres. Geosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere. To show are learning we used the digital tool called thinglink. I learnt a lot about each sphere and now I am sharing it with you. You may think you know lots about the hydrosphere but did you know water is a million years old. Well its true so I guess you don't know everything so why not stop and have a little read... 

So you learned something new I sure did. If you want to make a thinglink then go to your search bar and search thinglink.com Something you might find hard when making a thinglink is it takes some time to change from one to other. So just take your time and have some fun.

Timeline

LO: Is to create an Insisomo timeline.

Today we explored the site of Timeline.knightlab

This site is for making a timeline using google spreadsheet.

I learned a lot of things using this site it is another digital tool I can use when doing my work.

This tool would be used when doing reading and searching up information.

Insisomo is when you use interactions which is In. si is for sight. so is for sound. mo is for motion. 

Together they make Insisomo and this is what I use when making a blog post effective blog post.I think I have met the sight and the motion task.

Some challenges you might face when making this is when your adding a new column. Make sure to to replace a 1000 with how many you want to add I learned that the hard way. I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog post and you have fun creating one to.

My Audience

We are learning to create a positive digital footprint.

We often share personal information when we are online. The people we share with could be our friends and family or people we don't know. We need to make smart decisions about what personal information we share online.

Soft Materials

Today we have another session of soft materials. 

We worked in partners and mine was Lauren. In soft materials we learnt how to thread the sewing machine. I have used a sewing machine before but this was a different sort of model so I still learnt lots about threading the machine.

Once we had thread the sewing machine we got to try it out on test fabric to see if we did it right. If we did then we could do some practice.

I had some much fun getting hands on a getting to use the sewing machine. I learnt a whole bunch of new things. I found out that all of the sewing machine are not different from each other.

Reading

For reading we have been going on to a site for Newsela and reading texts from there. We read this cool text and I have done a DLO about it. The text was called the history of earth day.

Earth day is a day  is celebrated to show how much we love the earth. Senator Gaylor came up with this idea. The reason he made earth day up because we where not treating earth very nicely. So this way everyone is coming together and helping the earth. I really liked finding out about earth day and I want you to join in on earth day!!!

Soft Materials

Today we went to technology for soft materials. 

 WALT: learning how to use a sewing machine.

Today when we went to tech we learnt how to use a sewing machine safely we did this by learning what dose what and what moves when we press the peddle. To practice this we started sewing on a template. That looked like this.

Once we had finished sewing our template we got to do a Challenge. For my challenge I did a butterfly.

Reflection  

I loved doing technology today I learnt to use a new sewing machine. I had fun and learnt a lot of new skills.

The heart of the school

The heart of the school

WALT was to learn how to make a WordCloud and to present information.

Term 1 has flew past and bam it's term 2. I have some work that I have made on the first week of term 1 about words the describe on what makes Hornby high a good school. To show the words in an presentable way we used WordCloud.

• First we went on to WordCloud and had a little look around and tested things out.
• Then we started typing in words to describe a good school e.g value.
• Once we sorted out the words we change the colour and the shape the words would be.
• Then we finished it and upload it.

Overall I had  an awesome time learning how to use WordCloud and all it can do.

Now I would say I am an expert!
